(The Post Millennial) – Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser confidently stated on Friday that the new Democrat-led Congress would be open to the idea of granting DC statehood, a move that would strongly favor the Democrats electorally if enacted.
Biden showed support for DC statehood while on the campaign trail, but hasn’t made recent mention of it.
“I have supported statehood for 36 years,” Biden said.
Bowser explained that DC could become a state with a simple majority vote in Congress and approval from the President in Friday’s US Conference of Mayors winter meeting.
Now that Democrats hold a majority in both the House and the Senate success in turning DC into a state is much more likely, Bowser says.
Bowser also said that she plans to push Biden on DC statehood as part of his first 100 days agenda.
“The nation’s capital, the federal enclave, continues to exist as the nation’s capital and everything outside of those new boundaries becomes the 51st state. Our congresswoman – we had our first successful vote on statehood in the House of Representatives last year. She reintroduced the bill. She has a record number of sponsors,” Bowser explained.
“It is going to be reintroduced in the Senate in a couple of weeks, and we expect to have a favorable vote in the Senate as well and then it goes to the president of the United States. We have made a big focus to President Biden to support DC statehood and make it part of his 100 day agenda,” she continued.
The statehood movement has been fostered by the Democratic party as a way to achieve additional favorable Congressional seats.
